Home Improvement
Sometimes people hear the words ‘home improvement’ and feel daunted already, thinking it to be a difficult, challenging, time-consuming process. Perhaps they think it means something more complicated and expensive, such as kitchen or bathroom remodeling. In truth, home improvement is anything that improves the home, which can be something as simple as a fresh coat of paint!
Painting is one of my personal favorite forms of home improvement. It’s cheap, easy, and not so time consuming. It can also transform the whole look and feel of a room, or even the entire home, interior and exterior both.
Of course, it’s not really so simple as buying just any can of paint and using just any brush. There are various finishes of paint to choose from. Interior paint finishes include flat, satin, eggshell, semi-gloss, and glossy. It depends on which room you wish to paint and what its use is which paint finish you choose. For example, with a child’s bedroom, you would want to use either eggshell or satin finish, as these would hold up better in rooms with higher use, and are more washable. The higher gloss finishes will show any wall imperfections, so before using these it is even more important to prep the walls well.
Before painting, it is best to clean the surface you wish to paint so that the paint will stick better. It wouldn’t be very profitable to have spent much time painting, only to see the paint peel or crack soon because the wall wasn’t clean!
It is also advisable to invest in good quality brushes of varying sizes, because you will need smaller brushes for smaller areas, such as above doors, or in corners. If painting a large area, use rollers. This will cover more area in a shorter time.
This touches some of the basics of painting.
